The Zones of Regulation

The ‘Zones of Regulation’ programme develops awareness of feelings, energy and alertness levels while exploring a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. This is embedded in our curriculum and daily practice so that the simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation helps make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for learners and those who support them.

The Zones of Regulation follows a specific curriculum, and this is taught to all our children at an appropriate level beginning in reception. This is embedded throughout the school. All our classrooms have the Zones of Regulation displayed for children to identify and communicate how they are feeling throughout their day, as well as ‘calm corners’ that children can access when feeling overwhelmed with a toolbox of strategies to support regulation – without the need to leave the classroom environment.

Children who struggle to identify or communicate their feelings may be invited to attend Zones of Regulation small group interventions within the school day that provide additional support with this.

‘Size of the problem’

The Zones of Regulation ‘size of the problem’ teaches children to consider the size of their problem in contrast to the size of their reaction. It is an emotional regulation tool that can guide children to self-regulate their emotions, in order to respond appropriately.
