Dramatherapy

We have a Dramatherapist working in the school with several children one day a week. Dramatherapy is a form of Psychotherapy; and is conducted at Deer Park School by Stephanie: a trained and experienced Dramatherapist and clinical supervisor .

Dramatherapy is a creative, psychological therapy that uses the art forms of drama and theatre to express feelings, needs and issues in a safe and confidential space. The medium of drama is particularly effective with children because of its appeal, immediacy and efficacy. Children often find it hard to express themselves through words and as a result can shut down when feeling pressured to talk. Because Dramatherapy works obliquely and uses nonverbal, as well as verbal, means of communication, it can overcome this potential difficulty. Through using the language of metaphor and symbol along with drama techniques such as storytelling and role-play, children can safely and effectively express themselves; transforming difficult and often raw feelings into more manageable metaphors.
